Newsweek Editor: Global Warming Skepticism Like Denying Moon-Landing

Photo of Jeff Poor.

The media are finding new and innovative ways to disparage those who question global warming hysteria.

You’ve probably heard that Scott Pelley from CBS likened global warming skeptics to Holocaust deniers back in March, but in an article dated October 1, Newsweek Senior Editor Sharon Begley (pictured at right) found a fresh analogy that vilifies skeptics.

In an article posted on the new The Yale Forum on Climate Change & The Media Web site, she dismissed them as the equivalent of moon landing deniers.

When asked if journalists should be more interpretive or analytical in their climate change reporting Begley said, “It depends …When you cover the history of the space program, you don't quote the percentage of Americans who think the moon landings took place on a stage in Arizona.”

Begley was defending her article in the August 13 issue of Newsweek that described global-warming skepticism as a “well-coordinated, well-funded campaign by contrarian scientists, free-market think tanks and industry [that] has created a paralyzing fog of doubt around climate change.”

got it backwards

Ms. Begley has this backwards.  She is on the side of the moon landing deniers who promote every kook story from the internet.

the moon landing never happened dammit!

NASA has always been worried about reentry because the world is flat. If they try to land when the earth is on it's side the spacecraft would just fly right by our planet.

Now let's see how many wackos pick up on this.

Say Cheese

You know why we've never gone to the moon don't you?  Nasa has been bought off by Big Cheese.  If we landed on the moon and found out it was made of cheese, this would put the cheese industry out of business.  Big Cheese has bought them off so they can keep the price of domestic cheese at inflated levels.

A challenge Sharon Begley.

“well-coordinated, well-funded campaign by contrarian scientists,
free-market think tanks and industry [that] has created a paralyzing
fog of doubt around climate change.”

I would challenge Sharon Begley to point me to just one scientist, think tank, or industry that doubts climate change. I mean, I don't doubt climate change. The earth's climate is always changing. It's done this for millions of years and will continue to do so for millions more. Now, how much human activity can affect those changes is a whole other debate.

"a well-coordinated, well-funded campaign..."

WHERE"S MY MONEY?

I haven't seen a dime. If this is a "well-funded campaign", the least the money people could do is send me a few bucks.

This is just like the government promising a "Drug-Free America": they've been making that promise for years, and I still haven't seen any free drugs!

You know how this is

You know how this is eventually going to turn out don't you? If it turns out that most of the global warming is due to natural causes the libs are going to duck under the cover that they were right about warming and downplay the fact that they attributed it to man. Likewise they will claim those on the opposite side with saying that warming was not happening at all instead of the reality that the question really was about the science of of why it was happening.

Brilliant

What's the moon made of?

JDW

Sen Clinton: Founder of Media Matters

Can she define what % of

Can she define what % of global warming is man-made and which percentage is natural? If it's so dang provable, then she should be able to do this with no problem.

The moon landing is a historic event, filled with fascinating photos, moon rocks brought back and eyewitness accounts from the surface of the moon.

Global warming is a theory about possible future scenarios. It's so intangible and speculative that to compare the two is just laughable.

But if you think global warming is so likely to occur, why not put your money where your mouth is? Buy some property a few miles inland from the shoreline. In roughly 100 years, with the coastline receding, you'll have some highly desirable beachfront property that you can pass down to your family and they can make some serious coin.

Y'know, if your theory is so sound. Just make sure to keep supporting Republican leadership so that the coast disappears unfettered.

Ms Bagley puts up the

Ms Begley puts up the typical intellectually dishonest non sequitor straw man argument we come to expect of the liberal MSM.   Apparently, she thinks the public is so stupid as not be able to distinguish between a demonstrable fact or event versus an explanation of how things work.  Here's a hint Ms. Begley, we all or most all acknowledge the climate has gotten warmer in the Northern Hemisphere given the current information we have.  We disagree on what makes it warmer, the conservatives say for the most part it's the sun, you know that hot ball that shines during the daytime; dolts like you claim it's man based on a gas that doesn't even make up 1% of the atmosphere!  Dolts like you don't recognize water vapor as being 95% of the prime atmospheric greenhouse effect.  You heard of Occam's Razor?  Look it up moron.

BTW-Ms. Begley, the Southern Hemisphere hasn't warmed even according to the Hadley Centre so how can it be global warming if half the planet is not warming????  http://motls.blogspot.com/2006/09/southern-hemisphere-ignores-global.html What a Dolt!!!  Are you saying CO2 works in reverse on the bottom side of the planet??? Idiot!!!  How do you like that strawman argument?

When you feel you have to walk on eggshells to avoid problems with the MSM you are being codependent, the cure is to stomp on the eggshells

When you cover the

When you cover the history of the space program...

Note the word, "history". The space program and WWII are part of history. They happened in the past. There are people alive today who can give first hand accounts of events related to them. The global warming hysteria is about what might happen in some future time point if the earth's climate reacts exactly like the computer models say it will and if humans fail to adapt to prevent the catastrophies imagined.
"Denying" one is denying history. "Denying" the other is denying man's infallibility in predicting the future. They are nothing alike.

IMHO the obverse is true.

Believing in AGW is proof you are a Moonbat!

Off topic but dosn't it

Off topic but dosn't it look like Sharon needs a little sun? I mean she has been in the dark waaaaaay too long.

The only thing you should feel when shooting insurgents is the rifle recoil.

Maybe an appropriate

Maybe an appropriate response to Ms. Begley is to suggest that believing in Global Warming is like believing in the Easter Bunny.

I'm a Newsweek denier.

Newsweek and Begley are hypocritical skeptics

Newsweek and Begley are hypocritical skeptics - on issues dear to their cause.

Begley said, "It depends ...When you cover the history of the space program, you don't quote the percentage of Americans who think the moon landings took place on a stage in Arizona."

A analogous look at how hypocritical Begley's (a Newsweek "senior editor") principle is, can be understood by swapping Newsweek's view of global warming with the world's HIV/Aids crisis. Any debate that it's a crisis? We're talking the "moon" here!

In May 15, 2006 special issue of Newsweek titled Aids at 25, 40 pages were devoted to the history of and the HIV/Aids battle. Newsweek visits a lot of old bitter history – in fact on the opening page they mutter this: “He [Reagan] didn't publicly utter the term "AIDS" until 1987. They just never miss the opportunity, do they? We were just beginning to understand Aids, during those years – quite unlike during the Clinton era, when we damn well understood that a world pandemic was underway, most notably in Africa. Back to what should be the meida’s bitter history with Bill Clinton in a bit. Newsweek did, naturally enough, afford former President Bill Clinton, not only a full-page picture of himself but his own special 1,317 word self-legacy, “My Quest to Improve Care.” To his credit, Clinton does mention the “Bush Administration,” but not until the next to last paragraph, right along with the Gates Foundation, but only after mentioning himself – the “I” word – 26 times.

President Bush and his world recognized leadership is a no-show, in this Newsweek special. Well, unless you hang in there to the end of the special report, on page 64, you might notice the little note: "Only 3% of Americans know that the Bush administration has more than doubled U.S. Spending to combat HIV/Aids in Developing countries.” Only 3% know of it - by golly, I wonder why? (Of course, now we understand that Bush far more than doubled aid to Africa to combat Aids - he's significantly helped turn the corner in the battle).

Let’s talk about Bill Clinton’s quest, as president, to address the HIV/Aids Pandemic. Seeing how there was no shortage of published anger at Clinton’s lack of accomplishment here, this would seem to be fair play for Newsweek, would it not  – Reagan certainly was.

Clinton’s true legacy:

Liberal writer David Corn, Washington editor of The Nation, in a 2002 piece titled: Too little, too late - How many times is Bill Clinton going to apologize to Africa?, set the record straight: "A cynical guess at Clinton's motivations: AIDS in Africa, it doesn't poll well." And, this dandy, “The prevailing view was, these people should die quietly.”

Imagine how often we would hear these views and the outrage which would be generated towards President Bush, if conservatives were to say such things.

Bob Geldof [Live 8] talking about Clinton: "Clinton talked the talk and did diddly squat, whereas Bush doesn't talk but does deliver," AND, "Clinton was a good guy, but he did fuck all."

About Bush?

Bob Gelolf [Live 8]think I'm off my trolley when I say this, but the Bush administration is the most radical, in a positive sense, in the approach to Africa since Kennedy..."

When Richard Gere trashed Clinton for ignoring Aids, the MSM defended Clinton, and played Gere down. Recently when Gere trashed Bush over the War, suddenly Gere is an important voice.

Bono echoed Geldof's praise for President Bush, "[Bush] has already doubled and tripled aid to Africa . I think he has done an incredible job, his administration, on AIDS. 250,000 Africans are on anti-viral drugs; they literally owe their lives to America."

When celebrities speak out for a Democrat, they are embraced by the MSM; when they speak out against Bush, they are embraced by the same MSM; but when celebrities speak out in support of Bush (even on an issue dear to their heart), they are ignored (censored, in fact). And when they speak out against a Democrat, especially Clinton, the words seldom make the light of day.

But enough about celebrities making praise on Bush for doing what Clinton would not do - how about the rest of the world?

The Institute of Medicine reported in March of 2007 (Wash Post) - An independent panel of experts said yesterday that the Bush administration's massive global AIDS program "has made a strong head start" and is "well positioned" to help AIDS-devastated countries control their epidemics.

Unicef, as reported by the International World Tribune on September 13, 2007.  "Interestingly, Unicef officials said, the new estimate comes from household surveys done in 2005 or earlier, so they barely reflect the huge influx of money that has poured into third world health in the last few years from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the Gates Foundation; and the Bush administration's twin programs to fight AIDS and malaria. For that reason, the next five-year survey should show even greater improvement, they said."

"We feel we're at a tipping point now," said Dr. Peter Salama, Unicef's chief medical officer. "In a few years' time, it will all translate into a very exciting drop."

The World Federation of UN associations, in recent days, confirms the glowing prognosis with, "HIV/AIDS in Africa meanwhile has begun to level off and could begin to actually decrease over the next few years, although it continues to spread rapidly in Eastern Europe and in Central and South Asia, the study said." AFP, Sep't 11, 2007

President Bush and his world recognized leadership in the battle to was a no-show in Newsweek's mammoth effort. He answered the call as president and walked on the moon. Instead, they celebrated the man, who thought the issue didn't poll well and certainly did not walk on the moon.

Newsweek's Still in Print?!?!?

Hmmm.  Learn something new everyday.

Cheers

New Sea Ice Record in SH

While we were hearing all about the sea ice in the NH this summer. With senators even flying to Greenland to see "Global Warming", no one's been watching the southern hemisphere. Seems sea ice also set a new record there. Only this time a new maximum.

Well didn't you know, down

Well didn't you know, down under every goes in reverse, even the effects of CO2.  LOL

The Southern Hemisphere is experiencing cooling and the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing a warming. http://motls.blogspot.com/2006/09/southern-hemisphere-ignores-global.html The reason they call it global warming is because the North's warming is greater than the South's cooling, therefore on a simple average the Globe is Warming.  Amazing what averages can do! Who are the two biggest liars?  So the MSM dolts proclaim the end of the world because of a basic math reasoning error!  So the question is do we believe no scientist should be so obtuse as to make such a rediculous elementary error or is there an agenda working here?

Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity

Not even the northern

Not even the northern hemisphere. Thanks to the discovery of Hansen's Y2K error. There's no warming in the US. And we also see no warming in Greenland. You've got a few locations showing warming.

And we were told the MWP wasn't important because it wasn't global but a regional shift.

My old research professor always said coorelations weren't proof of a cause effect relationship.
