Describing John McCain's alleged rationale for not mentioning '60s radical William Ayers in the second presidential debate, rising liberal media darling Rachel Maddow recently attributed a dubious quote to McCain -- "I didn't have the guts."
Wow -- McCain said that? Well, not exactly.
Maddow, making the assertion during a broadcast of her Air America Radio show, cited politicalwire.com as her source. Here's how it was reported at politicalwire.com on Oct. 14 in a brief post titled, "McCain Pledges to Bring Up Ayers in Debate" --
It appears Sen. John McCain will take Sen. Barack Obama up on his challenge.
In an interview on a St. Louis radio station, McCain said Obama's comments that "I didn't have the guts" to talk about William Ayers in the last presidential debate have "probably ensured" that the former 1960s radical will come up in Wednesday's debate.
In other words, McCain stated the words, "I didn't have the guts," at least according to politicalwire.com -- but McCain was quoting Obama saying this about him, McCain.
Having cited politicalwire.com as her source for the unlikely "quote" from McCain, Maddow went on to describe it this way on her Oct. 14 Air America broadcast, initially referring to McCain not mentioning Ayers in the first debate:
He was finally asked about that in an interview with a radio station in Missouri and he said, quote, I didn't have the guts, end quote, to talk about Ayers to Obama's face in the last presidential debate - I didn't have the guts. And so either that means he's going to run for president on a campaign of, I'm gutless, or that means he's going to bring up Bill Ayers in the next debate.

I'll give Maddow the benefit of a doubt that she misread the politicalwire.com report and did not intentionally distort McCain's words. Others may not be so inclined for a person with a doctorate in political science - and from Oxford at that. Maddow's assertion is like hearing someone claim that Sarah Palin loves being a vegetarian or how Ronald Reagan lived for each and every new issue of The Nation. A healthy skepticism would be warranted, one's politics aside.
Question is, will Maddow have the "guts" to acknowledge her gaffe? So far that hasn't happened, at least not on her radio show or cable program on MSNBC.

October 22, 2008 - 15:03 ET by bigtimerI don't give Maddow the benefit of the doubt at all...she knew exactly what she was doing with her every word...
Same as what CNN did twisting words to and later about Palin ...
These people are desperate liars, they know what the real polls are... they are worried shiteless.
Period.
Until people make these creatures in the media of all venues accountable somehow...this will continue, and each day it is getting worse being filled with outright, well-placed, intentional lies....

Maddow is a notorious liar
October 22, 2008 - 18:14 ET by Captain KirockBT, I do not give Maddow the benefit of the doubt either. When I used to be able to stomach it, I would see her gleefully distorting statements and fabricating facts on Olberman's show.
Her dishonesty is too extensive to list here.

October 22, 2008 - 18:31 ET by bigtimerCK...
...Yeah, what is sad is I have been watching her since her CNN days...
Now you talk about a complete make-over over the years...
She is a lying POS, always has been, she reminds me of Randi Rhodes only tones it down to get where she is now....
I beg the republicans to quit going on these networks...all of them...more people will come to Fox to see the other side, which is presented with balance...until the other networks quit with the attacks, smears, lies, ect...nothing will change unless the repubs get a clue of how to fight back...my gawd, the dems refused to appear on Fox...why can't the real repubs not get a clue and do that to the other networks...they are nothing but an arm for the dem party and everyone political knows it.
It would not be that hard to do...at least be picky with the shows they choose to go on...Maybe Morning Joe for some, and Dobbs for CNN...but until changes are made with the others...forget about it.

I agree to a point.
October 22, 2008 - 19:10 ET by Captain KirockThe GOP should officially ban all appearances on anything associated with NBC news. There is no hope for them and their viewers. They should still appear on the other channels though. America is an inherently conservative nation.
I am not a fan of his, but Pat Buchanan has had a few funny moments kicking Maddow around, especially during their live coverage of election results. She looks like a deer caught in the headlights when Pat comes after her.

October 22, 2008 - 15:12 ET by pickerseniorWhat are these vile hateful faux journalists going to do after "the one" gets in (God help us!)
Maybe that's what's needed for them to go away.

If you think that the attacks on conservatives will end after the election you are not thinking clearly. These people will not be satisfied until there are no conservatives left or the voice has been completely silenced. Liberals hate conservatives period. As for the journalists, if Obama wins it emboldens them and they will all want to claim some credit for helping to get Obama in the white house through their unethical journalism. If they believe that they have the power to decide elections it will only get worse! Wake up! The media are not just helping Obama but in races across the country. Look at their attacks on Michele Bachmann in Minnesota. The more conservative the candidate the more concentrated the left is at removing that politician with a liberal replacement. The money that is flowing from the DNC to these statewide races is startling and scary. The lefts war on the right is going to continue until there is no right. For those of us on the right we need to learn how to fight back against these organized and well financed attacks or we will be toast. They are taking no prisoners and we will either learn how to fight back or we will be casualties in this culture war.

RNC pulling $$$ for Bachman
October 22, 2008 - 16:19 ET by bigtimerBS65,
I am past furious if his is true...the RNC is pulling their support and $$$ for Bachman now because of her segment with Matthews on Friday...
I CANNOT Believe it...we finally have a real conservative with a spine, and they do this to her...I am glad I never gave a dime the last two years...I saw them do the same thing to a gal named Linda Smith a think it was from Wa. State over 15 yrs. ago now who was on a roll and had it made, but she had a difference with Gingrich and that was all it took...
If anybody wants to help Michelle...please go here...what they are doing to her is despicable.
Btw...this was information I heard from Matthews, and have not checked it out myself...but I fear this is very true.

October 22, 2008 - 15:22 ET by motherbeltIn that interview, McCain probably also said I will, I will not, I do, I don't, Absolutely, and Definitely not.
Not to mention yes, no, and I'm glad to be here.
I wonder what Maddow could do with those?

My opinion is that she will laugh it off and never mention it again.

October 22, 2008 - 20:16 ET by ThatDudeMaddow is beyond ridiculous. I catch glimpses of her occasionally when the roomie flicks on msnbc. She has a completely different tone when speaking of Republicans and Democrats. She takes on this airy tone of superiority and incredulous downtalking every time she speaks of McCain or Bush. Then, of course, follows a slew of both lies and twists with a blend of giant jumps and gaps in logic. Not a clue how anyone can take the woman seriously.
