Matthews & Olbermann Deny Media Doubted Palin's Maternal Fitness

Apparently fed up of hearing what they believe was a phony line being delivered by GOP spokesmen – that women across the country were offended by the media questioning Sarah Palin's fitness as a mother – Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann defied critics to find examples of any news outlets making that charge.

Matthews and Olbermann, spurred on by criticism from Hawaii's Republican governor Linda Lingle at around 8:09pm [EDT] during MSNBC's live coverage of Thursday night's (September 4) Republican convention, threw down the following gauntlet:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

KEITH OLBERMANN: Alright Andrea thank you. Thank you Governor. It would, I'd love the governor or anybody else repeating those talking points to give us the names of those news organizations that have actually questioned whether or not mothers have a right to sit in office. But we haven't heard that list yet.

...

CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well I have to agree. I sit here waiting for that list of major news organizations who have questioned her motherhood or her right to become Vice President, given her motherhood. I don't think it has ever happened. But of course it's become the talking point for all the spokesmen.

Matthews and Olbermann's NBC colleague David Gregory made a similar claim on Wednesday's "Today" show.

Well for Matthews, Olbermann and Gregory's information, the following is "a list of major news organizations," that have, in fact, questioned Palin's maternal abilities:

"There's also this issue that on April 18th, she [Palin] gave birth to a baby with Down's Syndrome....Children with Down's syndrome require an awful lot of attention. The role of Vice President, it seems to me, would take up an awful lot of her time, and it raises the issue of how much time will she have to dedicate to her newborn child?"

–CNN's John Roberts on the August 29th, "Newsroom"

"Adding to the brutality of a national campaign, the Palin family also has an infant with special needs. What leads you, the Senator, and the Governor to believe that one won't affect the other in the next couple of months?...She has an infant -- she has an infant with special needs. Will that affect her campaigning?"

-ABC's Bill Weir on "Good Morning America," August 30.

"Is she prepared for the all-consuming nature of the job?...Her first priority has to be her children. When the phone rings at three in the morning and one of her children is really sick what choice will she make?"

-Washington Post's Sally Quinn, in an August 29, online column.

The following is a more complete transcript of Andrea Mitchell's interview with the governor of Hawaii and the ensuing exchange between Matthews and Olbermann, as it occurred during MSNBC's September 4 coverage of the Republican convention:

[8:09pm]

ANDREA MITCHELL: Now you have similar backgrounds. You have more years of service though. You were the mayor of Maui for eight years now. Governor for six years. Before that you were an elected official as well. You're a Republican with a Democratic legislature. You managed to get things through. You also support choice. So you disagree with her [Sarah Palin] on some of the social issues?

GOV. LINDA LINGLE: Well I think what you're gonna see is that Sarah Palin is going to attract people whether they line up with her on every issue or not. In fact I had a great voice-mail from home today from a well-known person in the state, who's known as a feminist pro-choice, she said, "I want you to know Governor that the ladies at the gym this morning are so outraged at the kinds of questioning that Sarah Palin's getting on two aspects." Number one they're asking her, "How can you be a mother of five children and be Vice President?" And she said, "We said, the same way we do. We do our jobs and we care for our families."

They're also very upset about raising the experience issue with a woman that has so much more experience than their presidential candidate. Obama has never been the CEO of anything, neither has Biden. Sarah Palin has been the governor for almost two years, a good governor with an 80 percent approval rating. She's been a mayor of a small town and when you're mayor you can't hide. You're personally responsible for your decisions.

So women, I think, across the country, whether they're pro-choice or pro-life, I think they're gonna want to see a woman. Because they know one thing, Andrea. When Obama failed to put Hillary on the ticket he created a situation where it may have taken eight years for a woman to reach this level. And if it's not Sarah Palin it will likely be eight years before women of America have another chance to be in this sort of a leadership position. And I think because of that she's gonna pull a lot of them over.

MITCHELL: Thanks so much, Governor Lingle. And so you can hear the narrative that's coming out of here Keith. They are clearly targeting women voters, the voters that have been critical in so many elections and Republican governors stick together.

KEITH OLBERMANN: Alright Andrea thank you. Thank you Governor. It would, I'd love the governor or anybody else repeating those talking points to give us the names of those news organizations that have actually questioned whether or not mothers have a right to sit in office. But we haven't heard that list yet.

...

MATTHEWS: Well I have to agree. I sit here waiting for that list of major news organizations who have questioned her motherhood or her right to become Vice President, given her motherhood. I don't think it has ever happened. But of course it's become the talking point for all the spokesmen, especially the Governor of Hawaii there.

What happened to investigative reporting?

Last time I checked, it was the media's job to find these types of facts or to investigate and prove them false.

But that was in the days before the media relied on liberal websites for their stories. I am sure that list would not have appeared on Daily Kos, so it's no wonder they couldn't find it.

Nice work Mr. Dickens. I am going to try and flesh out this list some more and will be emailing it to MSNBC hourly until an on air retraction made by these two idiots.

I hope that others will join me and post any other cited quotes here.

Hourly emails

Dude, you're going to be sending losts of emails.  you really think Olbermann & Matthews will ever read them, much less admit they were wrong?

I hope you understand

The three stooges wont let facts get in the way of their lies. You really have to rub their nose in it.

They think we are all idiots.

Time and time again, they think we are stupid and can not think for ourselves.

I personally am getting tired of this and just wish I could have my 15 min of fame and tell them this face to face.

Unfortunately,that will not happen.

No helmits

Some time ago I read a short science fiction story about all these monkeys a scientist trotted out with amazing human-like abilities. The world was amazed. But, no one could explain why they always wore helmits. Well, it turned out the helmits were actually "brain replacements" that allowed the monkeys to appear human -- without the helmits, the monkeys were just monkeys. The helmits had to be re-programmed each morning to include all of the previous day's experiences to the total history stored in their memory cells.

Well, one day the monkeys helmit-loading function broke down, and the monkeys didn't get the previous day's history loaded. So, they ran out the door (to where the press was waiting), and did exactly the same things they did the day before, thus exposing the pre-programmed and false pretensions that were used to fool the world.

Obermann and Matthews go to work each day without their helmits -- and it shows.

Vampires

They have no reflection. They do not see themselves.

When John McCain brags that he will reform Washington, he can only go as far as his constitutional authority will take him. But the problem is not with people who will be swayed by his authority. The problem is not with elected officials, but with the Capitol Culture. That Culture warps elected officials. I used to think that the Culture was "special interests" or unscrupulous lobbyists, but I now believe less and less of that. Frankly, part of me wishes that it was a group of such evil monsters, deliberately corrupting our representatives, because at least then it would be rational.

Instead, I think the biggest problem is the media, but they're not doing it out of some evil plan. They're just collectively stupid. The voting public tends to elect people they know, and the media controls public exposure, so the media controls who the public knows. The media also dictates what light to shine on candidates, positive or negative. The media has tremendous power. They have no brains, but like a toddler with a shotgun, they have power they really shouldn't have. Olbermann denies there's any bias, not becasue he's evil, but because he's too egotistical and stupid to see it.

It has become a standard-issue political assumption that it's no good to attack the media - they're just doing their jobs, they're being scapegoated, and anti-media tirades are just distractions. But I'm increasingly convinced that the media is, indeed, the major problem in our government. How do we take the shotguns from these toddlers?

By taking away their power.

As I said on another blog.Dont let them interview you.Dont go on Meet The Press or their other shows. Why should McCain bother. They just distort what his position is anyways. There is a myth that candidates owe the media there attention. They dont. They can inform the American public by other means. The msm is pushing the DNC agenda so dont bother with them.Use the internet,Fox TV,commercials but dont waste the effort on the msm.

Agreed

I attended a Romney event early in '07 and was asked for a comment by a reporter.  I saw his credientials placed him with the NY Times and I told him, no.  He asked, why not, and I told him directly that I had no assurance that my quote would not be edited or taken out of context.  The look on his face was priceless because he couldn't understand how some dumb Iowiegan would say no to the chance to be prinited in the NY Times.

"Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain." Official Motto of the State of Iowa

LOL

Outstanding!Their arrogance has no limit.I will bet to this day the reporter doesnt understand it.Maybe one day the reporter will look up integrity and understand the meaning of it.I doubt it.Thanks for posting that.I just wish you had a picture with that look on his face you could post.

MSM has become the problem

Dencal

Media has become the 4th Branch of Govt. Sometimes I think the Fairness Doctrine would be good if it applied to all media. Cable TV. MSM and even Hollywood Movies.

Geoffrey, don't forget NBC's own Norah O'Donell.

Here's another one-straight

Here's another one-straight from MSNBC. Thursday morning on Morning Joe, Lawrence O'Donnell really got Joe and even Mika all over him for saying flat out that the fact that Sarah had 5 children should be an issue voters considered when evaluating her effectiveness as VP. Oh, and Matthews was in the room when he said it. Guess he was too busy eating. O'Donnell's statement was so blunt, lacking the usual attempt to soften that journos use to cover their ass, that Mika and Joe were sort of horrified and, at one point, Mika got up out of her seat in her response. Get the video.

Matthews looks sick

He looked like he had eaten some bad chinesse food or was just pained at how great the Republicans are looking.  I see fear in his eyes.

He actually looks like John Murtha...

He actually looks like John Murtha; both are equally disgusting.

I like how Olberman and

I like how Olberman and Matthews both reframe the issue. The Governor said that people were questioning whether or not she could be a mother and run for office.

Olberman comes back and demands of list of people who question if "mothers have a RIGHT to sit in office".

Thanks for the strawman Keith but that's not what we're talking about. Try to keep up. Take notes if you need to.

good call

Hey Olbermann,

Give us a list of the people who said the media don't think mothers have a RIGHT to sit in office.

The number of asinine comments that one person can make is amazing.

Phonies

What they are trying to do is plead innocent to a lesser charge thinking that they can deflect the REAL CHARGE:

YOU ARE IN THE TANK FOR OBAMA, YOU IDIOTS, AND YOU HAVE BEEN FROM THE START!!! DON"T INSULT OUR INTELLIGENCE BY CHANGING THE SUBJECT....................IT AIN"T GONNA WORK ANYMORE!!

But it was ok

For John Edwards to run while his wife was being treated for terminal cancer. And that run turned out to be just an excuse for the John to get out of the house. What a world the msm lives in.

You don't think they actually wanted a list did you?

Silly Goose!

Matthews Jumped The Shark Thursday

Did anyone see Chrissy go insane (again) Thursday afternoon? He had a nasty argument with Pat Buchanan, yelling at him and chastising him. It was hurtful to watch.

Then last night Matthews put on his wizard's hat and attempted to analyze the differences between the attendees at both conventions. He said that when you scan the convention crowds you can see that republicans look like business owners, ect. (I paraphrase)

So now he has become a clairvoyant, a warlock, a conjurer. How can anyone believe anything this nut says?

Those whom the gods wish to destroy...

...they first make mad.  K & C are looking pretty danged loopy.

Where's the wall-to-wall coverage?

[Excuse this -- not pertinent to KO/CM storyline -- just had to get it off my chest]

Now that the Chocolate City has dodged the hurricane bullet, the media is mostly snug at home in NYC resting up from standing in some rain while miscellaneous pieces of plastic blow down the street behind them in New Orleans.

I'll wager that now that the Chocolate City has survived, the rush to cover hurricanes threatening "other" less "chocolate" cities will not be so important.  Sorry Myrtle Beach. Sorry Miami.

Miami still has a shot

It may not be "chocolate", but it is certainly "mocha". :)

Its their job now to act

Its their job now to act offronted and "report" on the fact that reporters have been "allegedly" asking about her fitness for duty. Hrumpfffting around and acting affronted with their fake "we will get to the bottom of these false Repiblican talking point smears against the so called elite media"

The thing they cannot or will not understand is that Palin said in her speech that she is not running for their approval, I think they dont really understand that she really doesnt care what they think, and if they do it has them very scared to think they might be relegated back to being reporters rather than newsmakers.

This pic s/b a captionfest candidate...

This pic of Olby and Chrissy should be a candidate for the captionfest-

Chrissy: "Who farted?"

Olby looking pleased with himself- "It wasn't ME...!"

(sorry for being off topic. I couldn't resist. I mean, look at the mug on Chrissy and the smug smirk on Olby. What a couple of doinks...)

Profiles in Currage

You're right, But I'm afraid "Profiles in Currage" is already the hands down winner.

Actually,

Chrissy looks like he is trying to pass a big fat one that makes the process of excretion painful. Olbie looks like he just passed his.

Chrissy + KO = Love

Hey Chrissy & KO, before you walk hand in hand into the sunset to live happily everafter, Newsbusters has documented numerous media that have questioned whether Palin can be a mom and a vice president. Among them are NBC, CNN, CBS, the NYTimes, and the Post.

KO, just because you say something is not true does not make it so.

I saw Chris and KO on tv the

I saw Chris and KO on tv the other night laughing and smirking, while they implied that Sarah was not a good mother.  Made me sick.  The next morning Chris had the nerve to keep asking two young Republican men to tell him who had been sexist toward Sarah Palin.  He wanted names.  They didn't seem like they wanted to answer directly.  I kept yelling at the tv, IT WAS YOU, CHRIS.  How hypocritical is that?  They know it was msnbc and to blatantly act like he is Mr. Innocent is disgusting.  They make me so mad, but I am having a good time watching them grasp at everything they can to discredit the Republicans.  They are mad because McCain picked a woman with excellent credentials and their candidates look like stale bread.

This is

This is hyper-disingenuousness. These guys remind me of the Cowardly Lion in the Wizard of Oz, who roars at the group until he's finally swatted on the nose by Dorothy. He starts to cry and asks, "What did you do that for?".

TAG-TEAMED...

These 2 idiots remind me of the tag-team in pro wrestling who break the rules to win matches when the ref was distracted & had his back turned. Then when asked about it in the post-match interview, they claim they won it fair & square.

Mathews, Olbermann, & every other tool at NBC/MSNBC knows damn well who Palin was talking about. You suck at presenting the news, & suck just as bad at lying about how bad you suck. Maybe that's why only a few thousand people in America tune in to your half @$$ "news" channel. Go away.

"...it's still We The People, Right?"  Megadeth

Just inept?

OK Keith and Chris, maybe the MSN is not biased, just inept. In one short week I have learned more about Sarah Palin from the media than I have heard about Joe Biden in 25 years.

Objective Reporting? What's that?

"Journalism" as we know it has been extinct for more than 40 years (E.R. Murrow being that last true journalist). Today they are nothing but muckrackers, doing the dirt exclusively for the Democrat/Socialist party. True, there are a handful, like John Stossel, but for the most part they have to conceal their objectivity, lest they be blackballed (ironic, isn't it?)

Don Hewitt, the 60 Minutes producer, admitted to skewing the Kennedy/Nixon TV debate in favor of Kennedy by using hard hot lights on Nixon and other dirty tricks (those who SAW the debate favored Kennedy, but those who HEARD it on radio favored Nixon); the once-venerable Cronkite also admitted that he skewed the news on the Vietnam war against Nixon, and was instrumental in the collapse of that war and the deaths of millions by the Khemer Rouge (remember there were only 3 networks, only 3 major channels at that time, and his power was colossal);

We were told that Ronald Reagan was just an actor and a fool, but the publication of his personal writings proved more than otherwise;

There is far, far more of course - but should we really be surprised? Dan Rather still won't admit that he tried to throw an election with phony documents (and they WERE proven phony, the typeface on those docs didn't exist at the time - but no matter!)

The NY Times recently ran a sex-smear piece against McCain on their front page, and had to backtrack only after it was proven to be utterly false and with NO credible sources - this from the so-called paper of record that has become little more than a tabloid rag.

Speaking of rags - how about that US Magazine smear on Palin, vs the lovey-dovey cover for Obama?  It's only the latest and most obvious.

But why do these "elitists" worship socialism, or dare I say Stalinism?

Tenure. An elite class that literally cannot be fired from their positions. Imagine how powerful you'd feel in your own fiefdom knowing no matter what you did you'd never be fired - and if you promote the agenda privately and publicly, you qualify for promotion and even more power!

Two Americas, indeed.
