Ex-ChatGPT Researcher: AI Has One-in-Four Chance of Destroying Humans

A tech executive raised the alarm about the potential dangers of artificial intelligence.

Dario Amodei, the CEO and co-founder at Anthropic warned that artificial intelligence has a one-in-four chance of wiping out humanity.

Amodei, who served as the vice president of research for OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, said that the unchecked growth of artificial intelligence (AI) could lead to humanity’s downfall. “[The] chance something goes really quite catastrophically wrong on the scale of human civilization might be somewhat 10 to 25 percent,” he warned during an interview with The Logan Bartlett Show on Oct. 6.  He added that the technology can be used for good if mankind can avoid the “downsides” of its growth.

“There's a 75 to 90% chance that this technology is developed and everything goes fine,” Amodei added. If we can avoid the downsides then this stuff about curing cancer, extending human lifespan, solving problems like mental illness…I don't think it's outside the scope of what this can do.”

MRC Free Speech America has frequently covered the dangers of unchecked AI growth, especially when it comes to the free market. The head of Germany's antitrust office said earlier in the month that there is a significant risk that AI’s uncontrolled growth could increase Big Tech's hold over the free market.

Andreas Mundt, the president of Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, said Big Tech giants like Google and Microsoft could end up with an unfair advantage over its competitors when it comes to smart technology found in homes, workplaces, and vehicles.

"For us as a competition authority, it is crucial that this new technology does not further strengthen the dominance of the large corporations," Mundt said.

"The danger is very great because you need two things above all for AI, powerful servers and vast amounts of data. Big internet corporations have both.
