Ciara: Abstinence Lets Me and Russell Wilson ‘Focus on Each Other as People’

The media (with a few exceptions) slammed Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson when he revealed that he and singer Ciara are abstaining from sex while dating. But the couple are still strong in their convictions, according to Ciara in a recent interview.

Last summer, in an interview with the Rock Church, Wilson explained how (with some help from God) the couple made the decision to practice abstinence.

“I said to her, and she completely agreed, is the fact that could we love each other without that,” Wilson, then 26, said about sex. “If you can really love somebody without that, then you can really love somebody.”

During New York Fashion Week at Keds’ 100-year anniversary party, Cosmopolitan followed up with Ciara about her “sex-free relationship” to conclude that “the struggle is real.”

“How's the whole abstinence thing going?” editor Charles Manning asked the 30-year-old star.

Ciara stressed that it was a challenge.

“It's going pretty good. We're hanging in there,” she said. “I'm not gonna lie. I'm human, so it is not easy, especially when I look at him and I think he is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen — that I've ever laid my eyes on, to be honest. I'm like, Look the other way! Look the other way!”

But she also came across as optimistic:

But he's such an awesome guy and the cool thing is that every day, we're growing with each other. We get to have really healthy conversations and focus on each other as people. That is very important to me and him. It's very valuable. We're just enjoying ourselves and going one day at a time and praying and staying positive. Being strong here!

Cosmo then asked Ciara to define “abstinence.”

She responded:

You get to hug and you get to have a nice good kiss, but you have to be careful not to go too far so you don't end up in the place you're trying to avoid being in. Strong, strong, strong, strong! Just the strongest resistance to temptation.

Considering how every issue of Cosmo features sex tips, this must be a shocker. But kudos to them for covering this – especially in a media environment that treats virgins like an alien species.
