No Joke: Wonder Woman 'Obviously' 'Queer'

“Is Wonder Woman queer?” asked Entertainment Weekly. Wonder Woman comic book writer Greg Rucka responded, “… yes, because otherwise it takes away from [her] heroism.”

In an interview with Comicosity published on September 28, Rucka “confirmed that the character was queer” and said according to him and co-writer Nicola Scott, “[She] has been in love and had relationships with other women …”

Regarding Themyscira, Wonder Woman’s home island inhabited by Amazon women, Rucka explained, “How can they not all be in same-sex relationships? ... It makes no logical sense otherwise. It’s supposed to be paradise. You’re supposed to be able to live happily. You’re supposed to be able … to have a fulfilling, romantic and sexual relationship.” Nothing says paradise like a big lesbian orgy.

“But an Amazon doesn’t look at another Amazon and say, ‘You’re gay.’ They don’t,” Rucka continued. “The concept doesn’t exist.” If only we could all be as progressive as the Amazons!

Rucka insisted that Wonder Woman must be gay. In a response Entertainment Weekly described as “remarkable,” Rucka asserted, “If no, then she leaves paradise only because of a potential romantic relationship with Steve. And that diminishes her character. It would hurt the character and take away her heroism.”

So a strong woman making the independent decision to leave her home for a man would detract from her heroism? Even Wonder Women must submit to the double standards of modern feminism for not complying with the correct narrative.

The article claimed that “Wonder Woman’s queerness is not entirely a new concept.” William Moulton Marston, Wonder Woman’s creator, included many battle scenes “evocative of bondage and lesbian erotica” in his comics, according to Entertainment Weekly. However, Marston never made any explicit references to a queer Wonder Woman, although some comics since have written her a past risqué lifestyle.

Rucka argued, “… nobody at DC has ever said, ‘She’s gotta be straight.’ Nobody. Ever.” Well, whether or not someone said it, Chris Pine will be playing male love interest Steve Trevor across from Gal Gadot in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie.

But maybe they’ll have, like, an open relationship or something?
