Bozell Column: Coulter vs. the Counter-Coulters

Ann Coulter’s new book "Guilty" is out and two things are certain: It will surely be another best-seller, and she will once again drive the Left bonkers. No institution will be more offended than the national press. Prepare to witness their meltdown.

The Drudge Report caused a firestorm when anonymous NBC insiders leaked the word that Coulter had been "banned for life" from that network. CBS featured her on "The Early Show" and a combative Harry Smith tried to insult her to the extreme. He called her "goofy," "simplistic," "sophomoric," and a "whiner." "You should have a cross," he said dismissively. "You should put yourself up on a cross." Why are they so upset?

The so-called "objective" media clearly feel threatened because they are the very liberals Coulter is attacking. If they weren’t liberals, none of her mockery of liberals would bother them. Oh, they might not appreciate her style, as some conservatives don’t. But they wouldn’t have pitched debates inside their walls about how they will savage her in interviews – and I defy the networks to deny this – or how they would remove her from their airwaves altogether.

Those rumored bans have been demanded by the leftist lobbyists for the Censorship Doctrine – people who say they oppose "conservative misinformation," but clearly want conservatives tossed from the radio and TV airwaves before "misinformation" or just plain conservative thought spills out. They have pressured the networks to stop helping Coulter sell books. Freedom of speech is truly a dangerous concept when conservatives exercise it.

But liberals who claim to oppose "inflammatory rhetoric" on television when it comes from conservatives have no problem with uncivil liberalism. Or 100 percent hate-filled left-wing character assassination. Take NBC, which could not look sillier if it ever seriously banned Coulter for being hyperbolic, when vicious, hyperbolic liberals (Olbermann, Maddow, and Matthews) dominate MSNBC.

It’s easy to run down a list of inflammatory liberals who are welcomed on the TV morning shows. Start with Kitty Kelley’s wild "investigative" books on the Reagans or the Bushes. Or Michael Moore’s kooky conspiracy theories. Or Al Franken suggesting Karl Rove and Scooter Libby should be executed over Plamegate. (NBC’s Matt Lauer and his off-camera crew laughed at that.)

Or recall Bill Maher on his HBO show in 2007 suggesting Arianna Huffington shouldn’t ban commenters on her website wishing Dick Cheney had died in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan. "That’s a funny joke," Maher said. "If this isn’t China, shouldn’t you be able to say that?" He added that Cheney’s death by suicide bomber might be a public service: "I’m just saying if he did die, other people, more people would live. That’s a fact."

Harry Smith hosted Maher on CBS just months ago on his faith-mocking movie "Religulous" and didn’t say one discouraging word to him about his caustic remarks about Cheney or his hateful anti-Christian bigotry. Not one word.

But when Ann Coulter speaks, the brass knuckles come out. In 2007, Coulter was heavily criticized for joking that she couldn’t talk about John Edwards, since an ABC actor was forced to apologize for saying "faggot" at the Golden Globes. Liberals were furious. Coulter responded by saying next time, she’d echo Bill Maher and just wish Edwards died in a terrorist attack. Elizabeth Edwards then denounced Coulter for suggesting she wanted her husband dead. Harry Smith invited Mrs. Edwards on CBS, offered her brief softballs and let her verbally whack Coulter with a bat.

Smith is an enormous hypocrite. He completely ignored vicious remarks by Mrs. Edwards just days before, in accepting a "Rage for Justice" award, that the Bush administration was waging a class war that compared to slaughters in Darfur:

"The White House has led the charge against working people, in their own class war. The late, great Molly Ivins once wrote: ‘If there was class warfare, that war was long over. And it was a massacre… a genocide to which there have been words of acknowledgment, as there have in Darfur, but as with Darfur, no meaningful action.’"

But when Ann Coulter comes on the set with Smith, the gloves come off.

Ann Coulter’s liberal-bashing columns and books and television appearances are fun for conservatives, simply because there’s nothing funnier for the right that witnessing CBS putting up on its own screen a Coulter quote about Ted Kennedy and CBS: "Kennedy may be a drunken slob, but unlike CBS News anchors, he is not certifiably insane."

Call Coulter outrageous, call her a bomb-thrower, even state she goes beyond the pale of civility, if that’s your read. But do not assign that label to Coulter and then present your on-air love and kisses and giggles to all the public leftist hate-spewing that far exceeds any perceived incivility by Coulter. That is utterly transparent liberalism, and utterly transparent hypocrisy.

Great Column Brent

I can understand that Ann Coulter is not to everyone's taste but she gets very high marks from me for having the guts to stand up to the whiny high priests of politically correct America and say what is on her very quick mind.  Anyone who feels she has nothing much to say should read her well researched and extensively footnoted books and learn differently.  She has taken apart more liberal shibboleths with the facts than almost any other conservative on the ground today.

Ya Know . . .

I used to say that Ann got a bit extreme at times but the more I read from the ''media'' the more I realize that she is tame by comparison. Anyone thinking that Republicans have to take the alleged ''high road'' (like that dunderhead McCain) should realize that that will never work against the Left today.  We must play their game and play it better than them.

The gloves are off and Ann will show us the way to use our bare knuckles.

In this same vane

I saw Doug Schoen, a Democrat consultant, on H&C tonight and he was talking about how important it was, as a country, to get behind Obama on foreign policy and showing the world a united front, etc. etc. and Hannity, as I was screaming at the TV told him how disgusted he was with Democrats for the way they treated Bush.  This guy has the guts to say we need to get over that.

I'll grant that, for the most part, Republicans have a lot more class than Democrats, as far as how they treat the other party, but what the Democrats did to Bush was dispicable.  The only reason, and it is the only reason, they get away with it is because the press will not call them on it, in fact the press assists them with it, ala the NY Times.

It's like the 9/11 Truthers, I've never seen anyone, in the MSM, put one of those people on the spot when they mention Bush blowing up the WTC.  It's like Katrina, which was a media manufactured Bush problem.  I'm not saying Bush did everything right, but in no way does he deserve what he got about Katrina.  Just the fact that the people of Louisiana have voted out the Democrats, in that state, would indicate to me they knew where the problems were.  If that's the case, how do the Democrats and the press get away with the Katrina bashing of Bush?

We need more Ann Coulters, who can sell millions of books and call these people what they really are.  Screw the "high road" because it's not the low road if you're telling the truth.

Election 2008-God's way of showing us that elections count.

I agree DaMav.Her books are

I agree DaMav.Her books are filled with excellent arguments

Ann

Its a shame more people on the right don't have the balls she has to stand up and fight the good fight.  Too often we just roll over, and now look what has happened to the country.  We have no one to blame but ourselves, especially the spineless "moderates".

Amen. Two thumbs up.

Amen. Two thumbs up. Bingo!

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

As I have pined before

the lame-streamers are all cowards - simple, end of story. They have no reason to be nice to anyone who hasn't the read the memo - libs are good, everyone else is bad, including their reader/viewers. But, time is on our side, and they are running scared - viewership and subscriptions are down, and if they were as smart as they think they are, they'd start with less bias, real reporting, less editorializing and there'd be more viewers and readers (and once that is accomplished, I'd like to introduce you to a bridge I happen to own).

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

Hypocrites

I have long thought Smith and Charles Gibson have become the Graybeards of network television. Wise, unafraid, and learned they can do no wrong and have no bias except for telling the truth. At least that is what the lefty-goonies believe and push on the rest of the world. That is nothing but claptrap, as this article shows so well for Smith.

As for Coulter, I think she simply loves saying the things that outrage the left. I mean she LOVES doing it! And she does it so well.

Ann Coulter makes more sense

Ann Coulter makes more sense in one paragraph of her writing than all of her critics combined.  She is a true conservative, one who is unafraid and unapologetic for it.  This is something that is increasingly rare nowadays.  Too many people on the right act as if they need to sugar-coat their beliefs to make them tolerable.  This is poppycock.  This country was founded and grew strong based on hardcore conservative principles, the same ones advocated by Coulter.  Meanwhile, liberal philosophies have been proven to be failures over and over.  Yet, it is we conservatives who feel we should apologize for our beliefs?  This makes about as much sense as an Al Franken speech.

Here! Here!

You are correct. Did you see that Margaret Hoover person on O'Reilly last night? It is people like this that have destroyed the GOP and made conservatives and conservatism the ENEMY.

Bolton/KEYES 2012

Unfortunately (or

Unfortunately (or fortunately), I missed this last night.  I'm just tired of conservatives acting like we are the bad guys, that the world's problems are our fault.  I've watched as liberal policies have chewed the heart out of Americans, wrecked the economy and almost led to a loss in Iraq.  I'll be damned if I'm going to sit back and let Democrats blame it all on Republicans (or conservatives in general).

Harry, You Ignorant Slut!

Ann really came through this time.  Considering Harry Smith is all ass I wonder where she was able to place that ''new one'' that she tore for him.

I am loving Ann Coulter more every day.  She is what this country needs - a truth leveler.  If only our Republican CongressFolks had the balls that she does.

Go Ann!!!  We love Ya!!!

I love Ann...

The left can say whatever they want about Ann, but it will never diminish my love for her and her take-no-prisoners attitude.

You go girl!

Libs, eat dirt!

In 2007, Coulter was heavily criticized for joking that she couldn’t talk about John Edwards, since an ABC actor was forced to apologize for saying "faggot" at the Golden Globes.

If the Golden Globes had a special category for Creative Paraphrasing, this entry by Brent should win the award hands down.  It's truly a remarkable example of watering down and recasting a palpably incendiary remark to make it appear virtually benign.

Jer

Jer

I think what she said was something like this (paraphrasing).

I could call John Edwards the "f" word....but then I'd have to go into rehab (a reference to an actor on Gray's Anatomy for "going into rehab" for calling a fellow actor a fag).

Far cry from what you said, and, in my estimation, extremely benign...on Coulter's part.

Blonde... Your paraphrase

Blonde...

Your paraphrase is accurate.  But in the clip I saw, there was no reference to Gray's Anatomy--and I know you are not suggesting there was--nor to the Golden Globes or anything else.  It was just a naked assertion, and though clearly meant to evoke laughter [and her conservative audience did not disappoint] her words were inappropriate.

I believe Brent's characterization suggested a context which was absent from Coulter's "joke".

Jer

Quite so, Jer.

Somehow I have quotes from the broad with long blonde hair stuck in my brain (like I wish I'd said them....and wish I had the bank book to go along with them, LOL).

Nite to you too, friend.

Blonde...

Well, she definitely has had her share of memorable ones, and I have no doubt her bank account will be heading north again very soon.

Good night, Jer

What do I mean "very soon"...I'm sure a substantial "advance" has already been deposited.

Oh boy. Ann's got a book.

I Just Love This Woman!!!

She is a verbal assassin!  Ever since I first heard her speak, I thought, WOW!  Brains, beauty, wit and a vicious sense of humor.  You know you're doing something right when you can get liberal panties up in a twist over WORDS!  If she's so irrelevant, or just spouting nonsense, then why dignify any of her remarks.

We need more conservatives like her.  Did I mention that I LOVE THIS WOMAN?!

Happy New Year, BT!!!

Yeah, I forget where I first heard her.  It might have been on FNC but I think it was on The Al Rantel Show on KABC radio.  She's a regular guest on his show.

Is she controversial, yes.  Does she push the envelope, yes.  Is she inflammatory sometimes, yes.  That's what I love about her, though.  The fact that she gets under their (liberals) skin is hilarious.  Harry Smith, a supposedly professional "journalist" losing his cool on national TV.  She kills them with a smile on her face!

General Coulter

We here at NB, a site dedicated to exposing and COMBATING liberal media bias, love General Coulter. She is out the on the front lines day after day.

Sincerely,

a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Doing my part to drive

Doing my part to drive liberals nuts:

I was at my local Borders Bookstore this evening.  I noticed that there was still the homage to "57 states" that has been up for over six months on promient display as you enter through the front door.  And, as usual, I had to hunt in the political section for Coulter's new book.

So, with several in hand, I walked over to the "57 states" display and planted a copy of Guilty on the stands covering up the usual books by and about the "One."  Then, I walked over to the cafe for a snack.  Not five minutes later, I walked over to the "57 states" display and Guilty had been whisked into oblivion by a dutiful employee.

With several copies still in hand, I planted another copy and walked away to wander in the stacks.  Again, walking by five minutes later, Guilty had been lifted and put in its "proper" place - the political section.

Undeterred, as I left for the evening, I planted my next to last copy at the "57 states" alter and purchased my final copy.

My bet: regardless of how long Guilty stays on the NYT's Best Seller list, this bookstore will continue to bury it in the politcal section.

By the way, if you want to drive the bookstore employee nuts.  Grab any copy by or about the "One" and move it over to the humor section.  Hey - it was those goofy ears that made me do it!

I crack myself up . . .

Very good JD

I have done one better, I complained to the manager of our local book store (a popular chain) when I was looking for BOR book for kids, about how the liberals books were prominently displayed, and how they did not sell as well. He now displays both liberal and conservative books together on the shelving display in front. This was maybe two years ago.

In fact, a couple of month's ago they had the book detailing Obama's life and relationships (cant remember the name) but it has Obama's photo on the front, displayed in the front window. Their was a couple looking at it outside complaining how they should not sell "that" book, so the wife and I stopped and listen to them both for a second and then asked them if they valued freedom of speech, they did,,,,with conditions,  I laughed almost uncontrollably. Naturally their hypocrisy went right over their heads.

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

This woman needs her own

This woman needs her own television show.  I'd like to see her go head to head with a Democratic Party toady like Bob Beckel for example, five days a week.  Hell, she could take on two or three at a time.

Coulter won't stand with her toe to the Republican Party line and freely points out the centrist and liberal RINOs.   The Democrats only know talking points, paint themselves into corners, and are usually devoid of anything representing data running instead on emotion, ideology and the idea that "I'm right, so that's all I need to explain."

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

I Say Put Ann On The View!

She, by herself, can take on all the liberal hags with half her brain tied behind her back.  Then again, hanging out next to the likes of Joy, Whoopi, and Babs might drop her IQ level.

"For The First Time In My Life, I Am No Longer Proud Of My Country Because It Seems Like, Socialism Has Made A Comeback"

A C...Here's a combo

Here's a combo I'd like to see:  MSNBC hires Michelle Malkin to co-host Hardball with Chris Matthews.  It would mute some of the "too-many-liberals" criticism of the network, and would be pretty darn entertaining to boot.

Jer

I'd Like To See More Of Malkin, Too

but they would have to provide a face mask for Malkin too prevent any of Matthew's spittle windind up on her.

"For The First Time In My Life, I Am No Longer Proud Of My Country Because It Seems Like, Socialism Has Made A Comeback"

I'd Like To See More Of Malkin, Too

“Them that’s going get on the wagon. Them that ain’t get out of the way.” -Because enough is enough.

I commented on another

I commented on another thread a piece about moving the books around in the grocery store and pharmacy. Be sure to put the ones you don't like behind crappy magazines, or the kid's coloring books. As I said in the other post, I think I got banned from B&N. I don't know if it was like Ann's lifetime deal, but they said, don't come back.LOL. I just take 4-5 books at a time from the display and replace them with others. If you are subtle, it works pretty well. If you do it for awhile and they aren't busy, they may catch on. Make sure it's teenagers working, they don't seem to give a rat's rear. I have read that Ann turned down offers for TV, she likes the off time from writing. As for the View, I think she has been black-balled from there, too. She didn't play nice with the others.

Why are they afraid?

It's simple. Liberal views can not stand up to opposition from conservative views. Liberal views are all about grouping people and ideas together under lables and then treating one group differently from the other. That's why liberals always talk about classes of people and pit the 'rich' against the 'poor'. They always go the "Us vs Them' route in their arguments. Conservatives try to treat everybody the same.

Their tactic to solve this little problem is to try and silence any opposition. They call that 'being fair'. It is really censorship. They know that but try to disguise it with different terms.

Hey, I got the wrong "CHANGE"!

Alan Keyes / Sarah Palin - 2012

Coulter 'Style'

Reductio ad absurdem, Hyperbole, exaggeration, Satire.

One need not be reminded of the fact that liberals with their ridiculous bloviating ideas were here first and for Ann to respond to them in this fashion is simply because their atrocious ethics, behavior and hypocrisy DEMANDED it.  Is Ann a saint?  Nope.  Is she right about what she says?  Absolutely.

I think one point that is truly worth using to illustrate this is as follows.  Ann has repeatedly suggested the use of racial profiling to catch terrorists.  Using the idea that practically all terrorist attacks in the past 20 years have been committed by young arab males, this would seem to be common sense.  But lets not offend the muslims!! Just because they can't control their homicidal urges and brethren, we have to worry about offending people that want to kill us.  What else could you think of as an idea that is truly more mad than that!?  We don't want to offend the people that want to kill us!

In true Coulter style, she shows how frigging insane it is for the airlines to keep frisking 98 year old chinese grandmothers.  This is what the left does not get (even Bill O'Reilly doesn't).  The only way you can make something be acknowledged is to use hyperbole to exaggerate how crazy it is.

And quite frankly, I don't see how the left even has the GALL to get offended about comments regarding Chappaquidick and Kennedy.

"What you can not enforce, do not command" -Sophocles-

Keep telling the truth...

My sister and I thoroughly enjoy watching Ann regularly school the liberal establishment. We have a name for her: "Ann 'Take no Prisoners' Coulter".
