Seven Soldiers Killed in Afghanistan Get 1/20th Time Given to Jackson

Two days after Sunday's Washington Post carried a letter from a woman who asked “where was the coverage of my nephew or the other soldiers” who were killed in the days after Michael Jackson died, attacks in Afghanistan took the lives of seven U.S. soldiers, but their deaths earned a total of less than one minute combined on the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts on Monday night -- 1/20th the time devoted to Jackson a week-and-a-half after he passed away.

Emblematic of the disparity in priorities, CBS anchor Katie Couric read her 13-second item on the deaths in Afghanistan as she sat in Los Angeles with the Staples Center, the venue for Jackson's memorial, in the background. Those 13 seconds were squeezed in around just over 13 minutes, more than half the newscast's 22 minutes, dedicated to Jackson -- a disparity of 60-to-1 (790 v 13 seconds). ABC and NBC allocated about eight times more time to Jackson than Afghanistan (2:50 v 20 seconds on ABC; 3:00 v 23 seconds on NBC).

On CNN's Anderson Cooper 360, news reader Erica Hill and Cooper spent nearly 40 seconds discussing the “Wife-Carrying World Championship” in Sonkajarvi, Finland and how the winner got his wife's weight in beer, but allocated just 15 seconds to Afghanistan. (The Situation Room aired a full story on the challenges in Afghanistan.)

Even without Jackson it's doubtful these deaths would have generated significant television network coverage, as demonstrated by the MRC's 2006 study: "Touting Military Misdeeds, Hiding Heroes."

My Monday NewsBusters item, “Regrets Media Didn't Memorialize a Soldier Killed Same Day Jackson Died,” recounted:

Army 1st Lt. Brian N. Bradshaw was killed in Afghanistan, fighting in a war to protect all Americans, the same day that Michael Jackson died, prompting a letter to the Washington Post, which the paper published on Sunday, from Bradshaw's aunt, Martha Gillis, who scolded media priorities:

My nephew, Brian Bradshaw, was killed by an explosive device in Afghanistan on June 25, the same day that Michael Jackson died. Mr. Jackson received days of wall-to-wall coverage in the media. Where was the coverage of my nephew or the other soldiers who died that week? There were several of them, and our family crossed paths with the family of another fallen soldier at Dover Air Force Base, where the bodies come “home.” Only the media in Brian's hometown [in Washington State] and where he was stationed before his deployment [Alaska] covered his death.

The short reports on the losses in Afghanistan on the Monday, July 6 evening newscasts:

Charles Gibson on ABC's World News:

In Afghanistan, U.S. forces suffered the highest single-day loss of life in nearly a year. A total of seven U.S. troops were killed in a series of bombing attacks and firefights. Meanwhile, a suicide bomber attacked the gate of the main NATO base in southern Afghanistan. Two civilians were killed, 14 others, including two Afghan soldiers, were wounded.

Katie Couric on the CBS Evening News:

This was the deadliest day for U.S. troops in Afghanistan in nearly a year. Roadside bombs killed six in separate attacks in the north and south while in the east one soldier was killed in a firefight with insurgents.

Brian Williams on the NBC Nightly News:

This was a deadly day for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. Seven deaths in all, including four killed in a roadside bomb attack on U.S. military trainers in the northern part of Afghanistan. Two killed in another attack in the south. One more who died after a fire fight in the eastern region of the country. It was the worst one-day toll in almost a year of fighting.

Defining terms

When the Obama Administration redefined Terrorism to Human Caused Disasters, it pretty much put paid to any substantive converage of the military in the Middle East.

An offensive in Afghanistan means nothing to the MSM because they can not use it against President Bush and since it has not produced a stunning victory, they can not use it to aid President Obama so they simply ignore it in the hope that it simply fades and doesn't bit the current POTUS in the a$$.

But, for the moment, set aside the lack of MSM coverage and look at what is happening.  The US has launched a major offensive and we have suffered the loss of only 7 lives.  Historically, that - if nothing else - should be trumpted.

I think you're right.

I think you're right.

I've always said that the MSM doesn't care about our soldiers unless they are dead or captured.  Then they are "children" who were forced to fight in  George Bush's war.  When they are kicking A$$ and takin names, they consider them little less than mercenaries and war criminals. But now they are forced to ignore dead soldiers, and I think you are exactly right about why.

They need to ignore Afghanistan, they need to ignore things falling apart in Iraq as The Obama tries to "end" a war by quitting it....

What to do, what to do? Lucky for them that The Gloved One died when he did!

I didn't think it was physically possible, but this both sucks and blows.  -Bart Simpson

Exactly.

If the media can't use American blood to bring down it's opponents then it doesn't exist.  They certainly won't tie Obama to any military action even though he is CIC in case it doesn't go well because any deaths or failures  now belong to him.   It will be at least three and a half years before we hear the word "quagmire" again.  The rest of the world no longer exists unless it is praising Obama.

Hey Janet Napolitano...I'm proud to be a Right-winger.

Can't blame Bush

The reason that there isn't more overage of military death is that they can't blame it on G.W. Bush. It is the Obamanation of America, now. So, they can't blame these deaths on the President of the Obamanation of America.

Ratings . . . ratings . . . ratings

You have a good point.  The MSM is reluctant to illuminate Obama's campaign-promise reversals, so downplaying or underplaying a military offensive in Afghanistan while oveplaying the relocation of US troops from Iraqi cities is to be expected.

Also, because the MSM still has to sell soap, cars, and Viagra, they are hyping the death of one of the most tragic, purely media-created characters in history.  Michael Jackson -- or Jacko as he was regarded in the British tabloids -- makes money for all those who want to exploit him, so they will milk this story until it's dry.  Then, on the anniversaries of his death, they'll squeeze it for more.

The real tragedy is that long after the Left, Dem politicians, and the MSM declared that the US military was "broken" by OEF/OIF, American forces in the field continue to take the fight to the enemy and make progress.  Each American lost is OEF/OIF is far more important than the death a child-molesting, crotch-grabbing, drug-addicted celebrity.

Galvanic...

you make one great assumption; that the media actually stops reporting on it to re report it on the anniversary of his death. Almost two weeks now and everyday some stupid ass news report on this man.

"You see Obama is going to tax those not paying taxes...those making over 97,000 dollars ayear. Once you make that much you don't pay taxes...he's going to make them pay. And I will finally get a break." -My mom who is on welfare and food st

wait

So now all the sudden we're not sacrificing blood and treasure? Interesting.

New president, new standards

Now that there's a democrat in the White House, the media are doing everything they can to protect him. That includes suppressing news about American deaths in wars conducted by the president.

The media lost their credibility a long time ago.

It did make news here. 4 of

It did make news here. 4 of those killed were from this area. They were members of the 1/120th Infantry NC National Guard based out of Wilmington. It continues to be in the news as the funeral begin tomorrow.

Semper suprene nitens

Blonde now?

She looks like Dennis the Menace.

To be fair is Foxnews any

To be fair is Foxnews any better. They continue to relentlessly cover MJ, and now Sarah Palin.

HMMMMMM

If my memory is correct wasn't it the Libs that pushed for photos of the caskets of the American soldiers returning that they want to produce to show how G Bush was killing our young men???????

Put MJ in the ground and lets get on with life.

Since when do evil media

Since when do evil media liars give a damn about the American Soldier?

The only time they give adequate, although slanted, coverage to soldiers is when they can exploit their deaths to defame a Republican president.

Are you surprised?

Because I'm not. It's natural human reaction. Disenfranchised with war and enamored with a pop start.

Most of America cares more for a dead pop idle no matter the political viewpoints.

That is such an unfortunate

That is such an unfortunate story.  I didn't know about it until reading this story.  It's really sad that Americans/media focus more on Michael Jackson (1 person) than several American Soldiers fighting for our country.

Hypocrite
