Newsweek Uses Year-End Edition to Take Potshots at Palin

Photo of Brent Baker.

Newsweek sprinkled throughout its year-end double issue, with Barack Obama on the cover as the #1 member of “The New Global Elite,” a bunch of potshots at Sarah Palin -- and even derided teen daughter Bristol too. In a list of those who committed “low behavior” during 2008 (which did at least also highlight John Edwards), the magazine accused Sarah Palin of a “smear” against Barack Obama, on another page Newsweek described her as an “ill-informed, inarticulate shopaholic” (while on the same page hailing MSNBC's Rachel Maddow as a “brilliant” woman who “gives libs a happy new voice”) and deep in the December 29/January 5 edition the magazine ridiculed Bristol Palin: “For 30 years, the Moral Majority has promoted 'abstinence only.' Jamie Lynn Spears, Bristol Palin...how's that working out?” The specifics:

Page 21, a list of “The Biggest Losers” of 2008 “who set the high-water mark for low behavior in 2008,” featured Palin: “In a smear that sounds even worse in retrospect, Sarah Palin goes rogue and stirs up prejudice by accusing Barack Obama of 'palling around with terrorists.'”

Ten pages later, in a full-page year in review version of the “Conventional Wisdom Watch” (not yet online in the posted CW), the newsweekly hit her and McCain, but admired Maddow:

Sarah Palin: Ill-informed, inarticulate shopaholic has ego bigger than Alaska -- and she's still the darling of the GOP.

John McCain: Hard to forgive the nasty end-game, and Palin pick was irresponsible. But classy concession speech and Letterman gig.

Rachel Maddow: Brilliant, ebullient, lefty lesbian gives libs a happy new voice. Will MSNBC be Obama's Fox?

“Will”?

Finally, page 79 has “The Power Index” (also seemingly not online) with a list of the magazine's arguments for whether figures in the news in 2008 were a “player or pretender?” Under “pretender,” Newsweek discredited the Christian Right and Palin:

Christian Right: For 30 years, the Moral Majority has promoted "abstinence only." Jamie Lynn Spears, Bristol Palin...how's that working out?

Sarah Palin: She seemed like McCain's silver bullet...until she opened her mouth. A 2012 contender if she starts boning up on issues. Now.

Newsweek Editor Clinically Deranged

The Editor at Newsweek has become clinically deranged to the point of needing medication if he thinks his mag is anything more than the National Inquirer or the Globe.  How low he has taken this once proud magazine with his sefl hatred projected on the public.  His agenda has completely lost and semblence or reality.

I don't know which it is

I don't know which it is but they are defiantly on something at Newsweek or at a minimum smoking rope.  They are so far removed from reality that their rag reads like a MAD magazine parody.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Will MSNBC be Obama's

Will MSNBC be Obama's Fox?

That kinda threw me for a loop as it really illuminates how teh libs think.  I guess they believe because FNC is or at least attempts to balance out theissues and not be in teh tank for Obama then they were for President Bush?  They only seemed like they were because all the rest were so virulent against him.

It only points towards a bias that extends to them being in Obama's "where the sun never shines" area.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

Newsweak....

Brent,

The print media is proving once again to be the dinosaur media, since Newsweek has lost a ton of subscribers in the past year. This decline is powered by their unrelenting leftist bias and their sadistic pogrom to slime Sarah The Great. The left is STILL petrified of her and will do anything to discredit her and the rest of her beautiful family. She is a legitimate threat to their rock star Pres-Elect come 2012.

Those punk bastards on the left are still snickering behind their desks in New York and they think they have this in the bag.

The conservative base is still intact and Palin needs to become the unofficial opposition leader.

A take on Descartes: I think, therefore I am.

We know who we are. The leftist scum know who they are. They think therefore they are...but we know who they really are...

The media needs to be stopped...now. Take a stand.

2010: A GOP Hill

Newsweek is still being

Newsweek is still being published??  I rank it right up there with People Magazine and US.  When I see it in the Dentist office I will throw it away when no one is looking.

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you."

Throw it away?!!!!! bad, bad,

How was it a smear...?

“In a smear that sounds even worse in retrospect, Sarah Palin goes
rogue and stirs up prejudice by accusing Barack Obama of 'palling
around with terrorists.'”

 Sounds pretty accurate to me.

The only one to get smeared during the campaign was Sarah Palin and NewsWeek was right in the middle.

Supercon

You are exactly right. To the Left, the truth of Obama's palling around with domestic terrorists and Chicago thugs is a smear, hence should never be spoken of.

I have a long list of publications that I will never buy until a balanced news reporting policy becomes the rule. I have no problem with editorialists presenting their own opinions, but to have  complete publications that claim to represent "Middle of the Road America" obviously unbalanced to the left, is unconscionable. I'm totally amazed that some of the news organizations that are in the tank for the Left are still wondering why they have lost readership. Some of the more balanced publications have declined but not as deeply as The NYT and others of this stripe.

It’s been years since Newsweek has forgotten the reason for its
existence to report the news.

Once a proud magazine, it has become a publication run by sophomoric
bottom-feeders who think they’re still living in a college frat house guzzling
beer.

But, fear not because as Sarah Palin gains in stature,
Newsweek will be long gone from the scene.

Newsweek

The same rag that had the story of the Koran being flush down a toilet.

"Newsweek now confesses that its report that American soldiers in Guantanimo had flushed a Koran down a toilet as a means of gaining information from hostages–blamed by many for inciting violence that has killed at least nine people–was erroneous."

They havent got the blood off their hands for that.Who would read their trash. The editors and writers should of been tried fired. That is the thing with the left.Millions can die and it is tsk tsk(Pol Pot regime) but if you harm one tree they want you excuted.

Newsweak

Well said, Well.  NewsWeak's credibility is somewhere below a pimple on a toad's butt.

I can't believe newsweek

I can't believe newsweek put these unrelated items in the same sentence:

Rachel Maddow...brilliant....woman

Maddow is neither.

The only true part was Maddow, in a happy voice, lies, distorts, twists the truth, and omits facts.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

I would argue their

I would argue their credibility is equal to that of a Milli Vanilli concert.

Newsweek sales falling

It's not a surprise that Newsweek's sales have fallen dramatically.

http://www.foliomag....

A More Obvious Explanation

Why? Because it parrots some conventional wisdom about Palin, McCain, and Obama? It wouldn't have anything to do with the shift from paper to digital media that is affecting many other periodicals, would it?

It wouldn't have anything

It wouldn't have anything to do with the shift from paper to digital media that is affecting many other periodicals, would it

Some of it yes, but most of the paper media is trash just like Time is a trash rag.  There are some taht are thriving because teh y know their base, like Popular science which strays in the PC but mostly sticks with its original format.

Nuke em til they glow then shoot em in the dark.

A-D

Don't think you wordsmithing escaped me. What you consider "convential wisdom", most will regard as rubbish.

Enjoy your victory, it will be short lived.

Logic Check

Baker says, "...the magazine ridiculed Bristol Palin...."

The ridicule is directed at the Moral Majority's abstinence-only policy. Bristol Palin is simply listed, rightly or wrongly, as evidence that the policy is ineffective.

Ag-Decent

You need a better argument. Abstinence is diffcult to maintain but it solves many moral and medical problems.

No sex, no children out of wedlock.

No sex, no need for drugs to prevent conception.

No sex, no need to teach children how to apply a condom.

No sex, no need for treatment for venereal disease......etc.

I recall growing up and wondering in my late teens what it was all about.

No sex, no need for a forshortened childhood.

Oh, by the way, Sarah's daughter Bristol made it to her late teens before she succumbed.

 "The ridicule is directed

"The ridicule is directed at the Moral Majority's abstinence-only policy. Bristol Palin is simply listed, rightly or wrongly, as evidence that the policy is ineffective."

Are plane crashes evidence that air travel is ineffective? Are cancer deaths evidence that chemo treatment is ineffective? How about all the pregnancies that occur despite using(or not using) birth control? Are they proof that birth control is ineffective?

The only thing the Bristol Palin incident is evidence of is that sometimes kids will do dumb things, no matter what they've been taught, or who taught them.

"Libs never let you down. You don't have to talk to one very long before the stupid comes out."

 I've said it

I've said it before:

Abstinence does work EVERY time it is used. It is the ONLY form of
birth control that is 100% effective. When couples don't practice
abstinence, it is quite possible to become pregnant/contract a STD.

Why is it so hard for the left (and many on the right) to understand this?

A natural consequence of having sex is pregnancy. If you don't have sex you cannot and will not become pregnant...nor will you get anyone pregnant.

With peer pressure and the culture we live in that focuses so much on sex (thanks to the left) it is very difficult for kids (and adults) to see the virtues in being abstinent and to practice it without feeling like a freak. If you teach morality and strong values to children they are more likely to follow those morals. If you have and teach the attitude of "they're gonna do it anyway" then they will do it.

If I could wait nearly 26 years until I was married before having sex, then anyone can do it. It just takes good morals and some self-control. My wife also waited until marriage, the reason we were both able to do that is because we were both raised with strong moral values and we have self control over our desires.

Abstinence is successful when it is used.

"An armed society is a polite society. Manners are good when one may have to back up his acts with his life." --Robert A. Heinlein, "Beyond This Horizon," 1942

Let me get this straight,

That Bristol didn't follow "abstinence", is proof that abstinence doesn't work? That makes sense.

Once More For Sarah

wotsizname  Sarah has Principles through which she guides her life.  She states them and follows them in her life.  She does not go about shouting that everyone must follow hers.  She continually says we need to work with everyone, whether we agree or not.  She would help us heal the wounds from the amoral Left which have made us a house divided, a nation of enemies. This week she submitted her State Operating Budget of $5,582,664,200 to the Legislature.  Last week she signed more papers toward building the 30+ billion dollar gas pipeline. What have her detractors delivered to their state or country this month?  More hate. We hired Sarah to manage the state's business.  We're very happy.   You Betcha.   [

And this is why............

Newsweek will  soon be asking for their gubmint handout shortly before Chapter 11 arrives!

Newsweek has taken itself

Newsweek has taken itself completely out of the general news magazine sector and has made itself into, say, The Nation or Mother Jones. Once it moved itself to the left, it chased away all of it's non-left readers, allowing it to marginalize itself further to the left. The only thing - er - left - is for it to go out of business.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals

Has anybody noticed that

Has anybody noticed that Newsweek spelled backwards is...

...exactly... Who  cares?

Must be painful being a national magazine with an national impact somewhere just south of "irrelavent."

Poor Barry

can't take any criticism from Sarah. BHO counts among his friends a domestic terrorist named Bill Ayers. But if someone who is up against him in a campaign points that out, it stirs up prejudice. Give me a break!

I figure this is how it will be for 4 years. If anybody criticizes the messiah, it's racism. Let's see how this racism angle works when and if he and his cronies have to pledge under oath to tell the truth about the Blago case. Will that be racism, too?

Go Sarah!!

The only reason for the left's SDS ( Sarah Derangement Sydrome) is their fear. The children of the press are so afraid of the All-American mom they can't contain themselves. It's like the adolescents are back in school again, passing notes among themselves. It's disgusting but, in a strange way, quite amusing to see the symtoms of their sickness on display. It means they know her power. Go Sarah!

P.S. Criticize and resist the Chicago thug any and every time you get the opportunity. I know I will.

NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal"

Palin intensified the left wing hate at CNN...

Left wing hate has skyrocketed and coupled with viewing the hate America rants on CNN it has raised the likelyhood of a leftie committing suicide or murdering their family to 82.75% over those conservatives who do not view CNN at all. That should result in a rapid reduction in insane liberals in the next few years.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

No class

Palin will be president one day. I wonder who'll have the last laugh then.

Palin

The only thing liberals understand is jealousy. They show it all the time with thoughts like the Newsweek crew threw out in this edition. Sarah Palin has a moral code to live by....they don't. They are for the most part miserable people who have no core values and are grasping at all things negative to attach to their enemies...the Christian right and /or all things conservative. Somehow in a very small way this makes them feel better about their shallow lives......How sad. How lonely. How scared. How depressed. Newsweek, Time, they are all in the same boat...sinking. Their glass is always.... half empty.

 Sarah will be back, have

Sarah will be back, have no fear, the drive by media is livid because she ignores them. Sara understands that you never argue with an idiot. She has more class than all MSM put together.

NewsWEAK

As usual, global fascists who run the media think NEGATIVELY of those who believe in the US Constitution as a conspiracy theory.  AND NOTHING SHOCKING ABOUT HOW THE WEAK FOOLS AT SAID MAGAZINE GO DOWN ON THE BUTCH LESBIAN WET DREAM AND AMY GOODMAN'S LOST LOVER!

And I wonder how they will feel when they ARE FORCED TO UNCOVER THE TRUTH ABOUT OBAMA BEING BORN IN KENYA!  THIS GOES FOR ALL THE MEDIA, EVEN FOX NEWS!  And you know, I wonder myself why he is in Hawaii over the holidays, where he may force us to celebrate that fascist of "celebrations" Kwanzaa, WHICH WAS FOUNDED BY A BLACK NAZI WHO TORTURES CHILDREN!  A sort of black Mohammed!

And somehow those snive comments by NEWSWEAK remind me of the screeching done by the socialist nutjob Jared/MOP/whateverisgoodwhateverisbad who posts at Radio Equalizer.  And speaking of which...

"the future of political talk is
conspiracy based shows like Alex Jones or Coast-to-coast (who on
overnight, has almost more listeners than the pig-man himself in many
markets)

shrieking "lib lib lib" or "Bush bush Bush"..... just will not cut it anymore

the conspiracy shows are ENTERTAINING. Cable news shows are giving people their fill regarding lib -vs- con......

Look at what's happening to WABC, a non-political morning show, followed by Morning Joe (not a cookie cutter "lib shrieker")

This
is the trend. Just like D.J.'s with the echo chamber (cousin Brucie)
faded into the past, insanely partisan conservative talk radio and
liberal talk radio (that is terrified to question the democratic party)
will NO LONGER WORK

By  Rushiesaudiencegoesbald, at 24 December, 2008 10:47"

The Constitution is NOT a conspiracy theory and the founding fathers are NOT conspiracy theorists!

A nice reminder for me why I

A nice reminder for me why I let my 15 year Newsweek subscription finally lapse into oblivian four years ago. Newsweek's bias became too pronounced to tolerate even for this once Democrat subscriber.

You should stop buying

You should stop buying "Newsweek" and start watching TASS for all your news.

The Good Governor

I don't know what Governor Palin is doing but I hope she keeps it up.

Palin most admired woman in America after Hillary!

Trying to discredit Palin is a futile game played by desperate journos. Sarah Palin just keeps on keeping on folks, gathering armies of supporters and admirers as she goes. Sarah has once more starred in a Gallup Poll. This time as the second most admired woman in America after Hillary. Both are courageous and classy women which is more than what I can say about your anti-Palin journalist Try-Hards.

Moved this comment to a more

Moved this comment to a more approriate place in this thread.

The MSM has a severe problem here

The popularity and respect of Sarah Palin came not from the press but fron the American people because of her intelligence and competence. The character assassination of Sarah and her family is obvious to all.

The blind worship of the likes of Rachel Maddow by the MSM is also obvious to all. Her reputation is totally manufactured by the MSM and they have to keep propping her up.

Another difference is Rachel Maddow should have "front" tattooed on her chest so she would know whether she is coming or going; "girl" on her forehead wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Shocker?

MSNBC did a secret dna testing of their "whine" glasses and found Rachel and Keith are actually the same guy.

Don't blame me....I voted for Palin...

What's amazing is the sheer

What's amazing is the sheer power Sarah has. Just the mention of her name, sends the morons on the left into an absolute hysteria. Millions of conservatives despise the Clintons and detest Barry,  but they don't go into an absolute lunatic rage by the simple mention of their names. What this woman has is powerful and the libs are the stupid ones, because they are the ones who are giving  this power to her. They go absolutely apesh*t when her name is mentioned. Who else out there has that ability? Retailers and politicians who are campaigning are cashing in big on this power wave. If it can be harnessed correctly, Sarah has the ability to rewrite the political landscape.

My mother gives us kids Newsweek

Even when Mom got "forgetful" 20 years ago and I started managing her money, we continued to get Newsweek for Christmas--the four of us. Just like the other whole lifetime we read it. With the huggy-huggy-kissy-kissy Obama crap under Meacham, though, I cancelled my subscription. After 45 yrs! They didn't even do that right--they canceled Mom's, too, so I had to pay full price for hers to restore. it. The Charlie Rose interview with Meacham where he said maybe he overdid the crap about Obama finally did me in! MAYBE? Did the halos give you a clue? And how does Meacham have time to write long, researched books about historical figures and still edit a major magazine? Feh on Newsweek! In the AOL filler on which institutions will tank next--news magazines are set to self-destruct in 2009. I am just ahead of the curve.
